URBAN ADVOCACY:
Ontario Capital Precinct Working Group

Having become aware of potential threats posed by developments north of Queen's Park to the views of the Ontario Legislative Assembly, Catherine worked with dtah and the Centre for Landscape Research to develop imaging and public education materials to raise awareness of the need to introduce protection. The ACO was joined by various residents groups and government officials to found the Ontario Capital Precinct Working Group. A private members bill was introduced by MPP Rosario Marchese, but without government support did not succeed.

Without the support of the Premier McGuinty and cabinet, efforts by ACO, and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Steve Peters, to appeal an out of scale development at 21 Avenue Road were doomed. As a result of the work of the Ontario Capital Precinct Working Group, a citizen's organization, The City of Toronto has amended its Official Plan to include partial protection, but until the province steps in to assist the view will continue to be compromised.

The citizen efforts have been recognized by Councillor Wong Tam with a Ward 27 City Builder's Award.
